Ulrike Lunacek

Panel 2

Ulrike Lunacek

Until November 2017, Ulrike Lunacek was Vice President of the European Parliament (in charge of the Sakharov Prize Network and the Western Balkans) and MEP for the Austrian Greens, with a focus on human rights and rule of law in foreign affairs, and the struggle against illiberal democracy tendencies inside the EU. In 2017 she led the Austrian Greens into the general elections. After a difficult campaign, which did not bring the expected results, she resigned from all political functions and returned to working free-lance. She just completed a book about her 8 years of experience as the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Kosovo.
A trained interpreter (English/Spanish/German) and long-time activist on development and feminist issues, Ms Lunacek was the first openly lesbian politician in Austria in 1995, and was elected to the Austrian Parliament in 1999.
