Pilatus2006 series
In Category:Pilatus, there are a series of images from a batch you did, e.g. File:Pilatus2006 picture 018.jpg. They include "Date: 2006 (for exact date see exif data)". Exif and [1] include for these April 30, 2005. Is April 2005 correct ? -- User:Docu at 02:37, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
- I wouldn't know. You should ask the author. Multichill (talk) 18:13, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Suggested rewording for bot message
Hi Multichill,
I played a bit with your bot message to see if we could find a way to word it in a more friendly way, and perhaps also start in the process developing best practices for other bot operators. If you're open to experimentation about this, would you mind trying out a wording similar to the below, and we'll observe for a while if people react differently to the bot? I've applied four design principles when writing this message: a) make it clear that it's an automated message upfront, so that users don't feel it's "fake" communication; b) avoid didactic/instructive style ("please do X") and instead emphasize choice, options, c) use commonly recognized emotional signals to contextualize the message as positive and not hostile, d) give very easy opt-out instructions. I would appreciate your thoughts as well, and am happy to elaborate on those design principles further.
Proposed text:
Hello (user)!
My name is BotMultichillT. I am not a human being, but a friendly automated script ("bot") operated by Multichill. My job is to find images that don't have categories, and provide users with advice on how to best add them. My job is not to annoy you, so feel free to ignore this, and if you don't want to receive further messages from me, just put the text {{Nobots|deny=BotMultichillT}} on this page. You can do this with other bots as well - see Template:Nobots.
Adding categories to your uploaded media will help other users to easily find and use them, for example, to enrich Wikipedia articles in other languages. To add an image or other media file to a category, you can add the following code to the file description page.
[[Category:Category Name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:
[[Category:Astronomy diagrams]] [[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets. You can find more information about categories on this page: Commons:Categories.
There's a great tool to find categories for images called CommonSense - if you haven't seen it yet, give it a try. :-)
Here is a gallery of your images in case you want to quickly add categories. Thanks a lot for reading this message!
Would be curious to know what you think. :-) All best,--Eloquence (talk) 06:25, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Eloquence, late reply from me. I didn't want to spend any time on the categorization process until I had the new bot up and running.
- The bot seems to be ready so now it's time to improve things. My bot uses the standard template at {{Please link images}} so please feel free to improve this template. You can find a previous discussion about the wording at Template talk:Please link images/en. Multichill (talk) 18:39, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Need help
Hey Multichill, all of my file upload scripts have been broken by the recent API change. They are all based on Commons:File_upload_service/Script, so if you have any insight on how to fix that script, it would be a great help. I have ~150 images from the US State Department, and about 3,000 images from Wikipedia Loves Art waiting in the meantime. Or if you know anyone else that might be of help, let me know. Thanks. Kaldari (talk) 23:18, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Commons:Language policy
Hi, in an effort to move the Commons:Language policy closer to completion, I have been editing it and cleaning it up for the last few days. I have tried to make the page as neutral and consistent as possible with the relevant policy and guidleine pages that it cross references.
I would appreciate it, as someone who has discussed some of these policies in the past, if you could look at Commons talk:Language policy and contribute your thoughts. This is the version that exists as I am writing it and I am encouraging everyone to consider the "static" page until everything gets sorted out.
Many thanks. Evrik (talk) 17:04, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Afbeelding:Dre-steemans.jpg

How to add categories

{ { fact } }
Apropos http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:PD-USGov-NASA/en&diff=next&oldid=30445454 - You say SOHO claims all materials created by its probe are copyrighted and require permission for commercial non-educational use. Please cite a source for that claim. [2] doesn't cut it; that would be WP:SYNTH. The phrasing there is lawyerly - it seems like they're implying copyright while avoiding explicitly claiming copyright. Please, reply on the template talk page. PS: Feels like you're following me. I'm hoping it's a coincidence. Your edit summary suggests you didn't read mine, so reverting. If you did, then try to revert more respectfully, as I've tried do to. --Elvey (talk) 01:02, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
<later comment> Actually I went looking for a source to support or refute your revert. http://soho.esac.esa.int/freestuff/CDpagesA.pdf, page 4 slightly supports you : it says "Modification or use of the Materials for any other purpose requires ESA express written consent." Not exactly strong support, but won't object if you revert again.--Elvey (talk) 01:31, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- I guess you didn't notice my note? {{fact}}? WP:SYNTH? Wtf are you talking about? This is Wikimedia Commons, not the English Wikipedia. These warnings are on the template to prevent people from uploading these images. Changing them like this make them useless. Images from this source will be tagged with {{No permission}} right away because this is not enough (nothing about commercial usage and derivative works).
- And no, it's not a coincidence. Whenever I encounter a problematic user I take a look at the latest edits. Multichill (talk) 20:38, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- WTF? WTF indeed. You say it says nothing about commercial usage and derivative works. So then why do you defend its use as a source for the statement that DOES say something about commercial usage and derivative works? Analogy: I can't legitimately claim that the CDC suggests face washing is a bad idea for preventing the flu and cite a page where it says hand washing is a a good idea for preventing the flu as a source for that statement. Right? That would be an improper citation right? See the analogy. (And before you go there, all analogies are flawed, by definition.) --Elvey (talk) 20:56, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Fotothek Categorization and Upload
Hi Multichill, am I right, that not all Fotothek images are uploaded to Wikipedia? I wanted to categorize some sports releated images, but I can't find them see here for example, there for instance Fotothek IDs df_hpm_0023913_012, df_hpm_0023918_002. Or are these images already available? Thank you for your help. --Florentyna (talk) 15:22, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- No, not all images are uploaded to Commons, just a lot. You can find the images already uploaded in Category:Images from the Deutsche Fotothek. More is coming up. We only have permission for the batches I upload so please don't do manual uploads. Multichill (talk) 20:27, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for your quick answer. Can you tell me, how many percent are already uploaded? (In the press information was written about 250.000 images, probably there are until now "only" around 90.000? --Florentyna (talk) 09:34, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Flickrripper
Hi Multichill, I see that you answered my prayers and wrote some code to to batch uploads from flickr. Unfortunately, I know nothing about python and can't even figure out how to download your code. Can you write a quick explanation of where I can download it and what I need to install first? I'm computer savvy so you don't have to make things too too basic, but I'm new at this. Thanks!! Mangostar (talk) 16:40, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
- Did you see Commons:Tools/Flickrripper? It's still pretty rough but should get you started. Multichill (talk) 17:02, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
- No, I hadn't seen that yet. But now I've tried it and I'm still a little confused. My boyfriend recently put ubuntu on his computer (which I'm using at the moment), and I'm horrible at ubuntu so it was quite a struggle, but I think I followed the directions properly and got pywikipedia, setuptools, pil, and flickrapi installed. My problem now is that for some reason I don't see flickrripper,py in the extracted pywikipedia folder. Do you know why that is or where I could get flickrripper separately? I didn't download pywikipedia with svn because svn seemed like a bitch to install in ubuntu. I just downloaded the nightly zip package and extracted it. Thoughts? Mangostar (talk) 21:55, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- I just peeked in this file (from here) and it contains flickrrippper.py. You're running ubuntu? Should have svn installed right away. Go to your homedir and type
$ svn checkout http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/pywikipedia/trunk/pywikipedia/ pywikipedia
. Now pywikipedia is in ~/pywikipedia. Multichill (talk) 22:08, 22 October 2009 (UTC)- That's so weird - I looked in the zip file I downloaded and it was there too so I just reextracted it. Not sure how it didn't make it from the zip to the directory with all the other files... Now I'm having another problem though. Here is a screenshot: File:Errorflickr.png. I am too lazy to type it all. :) My userconfig.py has:
# The family of sites we are working on. wikipedia.py will import # families/xxx_family.py so if you want to change this variable, # you need to write such a file. family = 'commons' # The language code of the site we're working on. mylang = 'commons' # The dictionary usernames should contain a username for each site where you # have a bot account. usernames['commons']['commons'] = u'Mangostar'
- so I'm not sure what's going wrong. Mangostar (talk) 22:27, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- The bot won't run if the user-config.py file is writable by others. Type chmod 700 user-config.py to fix that. Multichill (talk) 22:30, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

BotMultichillT image uploads
Hi. I noticed that the bot has been very active lately with commons uploads. Roughly how many images do you have in the queue? I ask because we have a capacity issue right now on the image servers, which will be resolved in the short term (= 1-2 months) but which could be a problem in the immediate term. If you have the time to hop onto irc, I'm on the various tech channels as apergos or atglenn; let's see if we can work something out. Thanks, -- ArielGlenn (talk) 06:36, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- See Commons:Batch uploading. Around 100.000? I'm online, but you appear to be gone. Multichill (talk) 09:50, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

I put categories on every upload, but they don't appear afterward and I get your damn bot's spam. I've put {{Nobots|deny=BotMultichillT}} on my talk page. If you want images categorized, do something to get the upload page fixed. Kbh3rd (talk) 03:47, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey Multichill, thanks for uploading all those Navy pics, I'm sorting through them now, looking for possible FP candidates.
A few things I found will I was looking through them:
- 1. Some images seem to have had something go wrong with their title during the upload; For example this one and this one. I'm assuming you meant to have 's around some words ('Sea Sparrow') but something's gone awry. You might want to fix it before you move on to the Army upload.
- 2. There also appears to be at least one categorisation error. If you take a look at Category:General views of USS Kearsarge (CV-33) and Category:Aboard USS Kearsarge (CV-33), you'll see a number of pictures of another ship of the same name; Category:USS Kearsarge (LHD-3). They are 2 different ships (the original Kearsage was an Essex class carrier, scrapped in 1974), and while I'm happy to re-categorise them (I'll be helping with the whole batch) is there something you can do to prevent this sort of thing happening in future?
- 3. Though you stated at the Village Pump that you'd built in a duplicate checker, I've found quite a few duplicates as I've browsed the batch. For example, your file duplicates File:USS Port Royal (CG 73) aground.jpg and File:USS Port Royal grounded.jpg. Also, this one and File:AAV Embarking.jpg. There are a few others I've spotted as well, though I didn't note them down.
Hope this helps.
Sarcastic ShockwaveLover (talk) 22:09, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Sarcastic ShockwaveLover,
- 1.: "^ldquo" in the title seems to come from "“ in the description.
- 2.: Thanks for noticing. It should be fixed now. It's was correct when Multichill uploaded it. ;)
- 3.: If you look at the file size of this file, you will notice that File:USS Port Royal (CG 73) aground.jpg, isn't a duplicate, but a scaled-down version. File:USS Port Royal (CG 73) aground.jpg should be tagged with {{Duplicate}} for deletion. The new file is an improvement over the old one. I found a few ones too and tagged the old ones for deletion.

Cat:Unknown
It says on BotMultichillT's userpage, "Create a daily subcategory of Category:Unknown, for example Category:Unknown as of 29 October 2009 (runs once a day)". Do we need to run that still? Category:Unknown - October 2009's subcats are empty but your bot keeps making the date subcategory. I don't think any more deletion templates use the old system. Ogg files
Hi - I'm more confused now than before. Most of the files I have uploaded to date are sound files in ogg format. I have always assumed that it's just one of Wikipedias idiosyncrasies that it categorises them as images. Since I just noticed you de-categorised a lot of them for some reason (which I still don't understand) I also can't find anything appropriate on how to categorise sound files. I would also appreciate some pointers on why you de-categorised them to begin with. Thanks. Akerbeltz (talk) 18:18, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- Maybe you could provide me with one or more examples of files I "de-categorized"? My bots only hunt down uncategorized files and try to find categories for these files, but maybe something went wrong. Multichill (talk) 22:04, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
