Hi

I see you helping out with notifying user of no source & the like on user pages. Can I ask when you do place a tag on a user page that you also place the {{Welcome}} template as well if they have not had one. It is a good multi lingual one which may help people to understand rather more (or get some help).

Thanks for the help - regards --Herby talk thyme 12:48, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Owh. I always try to welcome users but since i'm using the automatic script i might have missed a user. Thanks for reminding me. Multichill 16:11, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Deletion discussion

I have proposed at least one image you uploaded for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/Images of skyscrapers in France. Jackaranga 22:26, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Nowcommons all the dupes

Hi, just wandered whether your are planning to expand your fantastic Nowcommons all the dupes tool to work with the Bulgarian Wikipedia too. It will be fantastic since we are moving all the content to Commons and we will soon lock down the local uploads. --Chech Explorer 18:33, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

No problem. How do you tag duplicate images? Here for example it is {{duplicate|<image name>}}. Multichill 21:08, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
It's like this: {{дубликат|Картинка:<file name and extension>}}. --Chech Explorer 21:42, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok, i added it to the list. See http://tools.wikimedia.org/~multichill/nowcommons.php?language=bg. Multichill 08:56, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

imge:basad.jpg on article wikipedia:Besiyata Dishmaya

hi,

i've seen you have edited this image and and would like to ask for your help, i'm new here.

I have uploaded an image to English Wikipedia from the Hebrew Wikipedia. Under the Hebrew Wikipedd the licence is GFDL - GNU Free Documentation License.

someone put a warrning under this image that it is going to be deleted within i think 7 days or so, unless more information is provided.

I don't understand what kind of information is needed since i have provided the link which i have taken it from and it's free to copy or else?

i just tried to guess about it and added the - GFDL - in the image - is that what they wanted? the hebrew message of the image says you must put "wikipedia Hebrew" as the creater - which i did - so what else is needed to be done?

thanX. --89.139.106.5 22:19, 17 May 2008 (UTC) (wikipedia:user:shevashalosh)

Galwaygirl 16:04, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Nee, bot loopt eens in de zoveel tijd. Ik zou je hotcat willen aanraden. Kan je heel makkelijk categorieën toevoegen, ook tijdens het uploaden. Multichill 20:14, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

nice idea

But this pages are catgorized, please correct your bot and so there are many others which are part of a scanned book and only gets one category, the book category. Other categories will be added to this book category if needed.

Overeager bot

Jesus H. Christ, I haven't even finished with my batch of uploads and your bot is littering on my images. Give it at least an hour, please! Stan Shebs 14:30, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Templates and template pasting bots

I started to make some templates for the plant categories. I know they can be probably crafted much nicer than what I have done -- I am pasting from other templates.

I am leaving this same message with two of you from my watch list who seem able to do things and busy doing them. And, I think my first contact with both of you was in frustration, but it has been a while....

One thing, I have a category included in the template, so I am wondering if there is a way that I can keep bots from pasting "no category" templates on them and two, I am wondering if they can be crafted more nicely.

I have put them at Category:Plant Navigation Templates as soon as I make that category. The plants are a pain and these templates are for a particularly large family.

Also, thank you both for making my watch list not so empty or filled with narcissistic photographers. Additionally, if I could remember what frustrated me or put you on my watch list to begin with, I would probably apologize.... -- carol 02:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking about how much I don't like pasting messages to people, and you have the bot that pastes the {{uncat}} template -- does it only paste it on images? -- carol 03:04, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
My bot only tags images. I thought of a way to not tag images which have a template with mainspace categories. When i got it figured out i'll do some cleaning up. Multichill 16:17, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I have (not lately) spent some time categorizing uncategorized images and there are a few tags which categorize things that shouldn't count (to me) like the licence tags with category. NASA and the Library of Congress license tags come to mind -- two category I know that if I look for anything in them I will become either bored or distracted. Then, that a template can be embedded in a template -- what a pain! I saw a template attempted the other day: {{Category}} also which I guess is for those who prefer to use the shift key when selecting "[" or "]" on a keyboard.... I was glad it didn't exist. -- carol 00:45, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Please see Category talk:Templates which add a category. Thanks! Rocket000 00:49, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, could you modify imagecopy.py so that it removes the template {{move to commons}} while adding {{subst:ncd}}. Thanks —Legoktm (Talk) 23:17, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I had asked Filnik about the above. He said that one of the code writers could help me better. I am trying to transfer images from w:en:CAT:COMMONS to here. The first error I am fixing with a script that I have to manually run for each image. The second occurs when I try to upload an image. Can you help? Thanks —Legoktm (Talk) 22:54, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

I will modify the code to remove the Move to Commons template. I never came across the error you gave. Do you still have this error? Multichill 20:10, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I am getting a new error and i just updated the script through svn

task

I have made a consistent mistake with a batch of about 140 image uploads. I am quite certain that the string change would be easy (one author string to another), what I don't know is how easy it is to pull images from an uplog record or from sub-categories. The other part that I don't know is how interesting a problem it is. Do you have answers for any of those things I don't know and an opinion about the last? -- carol 15:09, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Sounds like a job for a bot. Which pictures exactly and what has to be changed? Multichill 16:04, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
That is good news to me! All but three of my uploads since 21:16, 21 May 2008 or images which are in subcategories of Category:Senecioneae. Working within the Category would get all of the uploaded images with the problem string. The problem is:
 |Author=NSF Photographer
it should be:
 |Author=Pieter Pelser
then additionally add:
[[Category:Pieter Pelser]]
and they are all also in category Category:PD-USGov-NSF which might be easier to work with if you are searching categories. The batch that I uploaded is neat for the task, somewhat. A few of the images had another photographer credited, so not all of them have that same author string -- making this almost a textbook problem, perhaps.
Thank you very much! -- carol 21:52, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for not doing this right away.... -- carol 10:25, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
I felt certain that I had written thank you for not changing those image pages right away; I repaired that message and am here to thank you for changing them so quickly like today! yay! I am curious, did you use my upload log or the National Science Foundation category? -- carol (tomes) 11:07, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome. I used the category (replace.py -cat:PD-USGov-NSF "|Author=NSF Photographer" "|Author=Pieter Pelser" -lang:commons -family:commons). If you ever have some boring repetitive job, just leave me a note or post a request at Commons:Bots/Requests (it's on my watchlist). Multichill 11:44, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
That is awesome! That wikilink is now on my watch list as well. "Back when I was a child" -- I really was thinking about how my early experiences with a computer are kind of a problem now. That first computer needed to have software downloaded from a cassette tape. Later, the differences between what a mainframe computer could do via networked terminal in 1982 compared to what they could do in 1997 -- let me just assure you that documentation was not online like that in 1982. So, I really appreciate if I can write my ideas and then have a day or so to figure out everything that needs to be done. Efficiency is elegance, but baggage is still baggage.
I first worked with a computer around 1988 i think.
I don't know if you have access to the other wiki, but I see that on English wikipedia, there is a bot that runs there sometimes and scoops up wikilinks to articles with the same name and adds them as interwiki links to the article. Wikispecies could use such a bot. I have been linking the articles at the encyclopedias to the categories at the commons. I have seen where there was a time when categories at encyclopedias were linked to categories here -- I cannot see much advantage in that.
My bot has SUL now, so access to every wiki, but i usually run at wikipedia, wiktionary or commons. I will have a look at species. With hints i can probably do what you want. Linking of wikipedia categories to commons has two advantages:
  1. People can use their (localized) category tree at wikipedia and hop over to commons
  2. Commonsense (the tool to automaticly categorize images) makes *much* more sense
It was really nice to see that bot trail in my watch list. I could probably tell you this a few more times and you probably still would not understand how nice it actually was. -- carol (tomes) 13:52, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad to hear that. Multichill 16:43, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Things I saw during my botlike days

  1. There already are categories here of bot categorized images: bots that move things from one wiki to another, usually. You should name the category with your bots name so that problems can be detected more easily. People (like me when I first showed up here) might also be a little angry here with problems with things your bot is doing, but if you can sift through the anger, you can probably find if there is a problem and get a handle on the solution. The new upload dialog is pasting a template on my uploads, is an example. I am removing the template because I don't know what it is there for. To be asked and understand the mark and to know the source is just a nicer situation for everyone even if some of the moments are not so great.
  2. Nested category: I don't know if that is the correct terminology for that, but for example Category:Netherlands, Category:Nature of the Netherlands, Category:Landscapes of the Netherlands -- only the last landscape category should be on it. Not all of the bots are able to do that and neither are the human beings when they first start.
  3. (undo): Access to the undo in the history, so if something goes wrong it can be undone. On my web site, I have 'rm' and I might not use it often enough, but I have used python and even 'cp' to make some problems there that I should not have or that I would like to have done differently.
  4. Gamelike botting: I can sense the gamelike feeling that running a bot must give. 'Shooting' recent uploads with an annoying template and I am certain that there is more than just that -- I don't know if it is too sophomoric to suggest that the game should be in not making a mess of things. Instead where making a mess is the enemy. Making something nice that others can step into and add too without a lot of clean up first.... It seems sophomoric while I write it so I will just be this little bit of whatever. Yawn. I really did just write a bunch of really boring articles; the rare occasion that I found something funny to write about was worth it for me though. So, there you go, I am used to writing funny things on my web site and writing serious articles hasn't always been so terrible. It is kind of the same thing. There really is a lot to be said about not growing up. On the other hand, there are a few ways that growing up becomes good, like the first few times that I destroyed something because I did not want to grow up, but I had grown up and I was the person who had to replace the destroyed item. So don't grow up but be sure to grow out of some of the ways of children....
  5. Naptime: Preaching is tiring, I am sorry. It will be naptime for me soon from my own writing.

I got this weird feeling

Speaking of gaming and upload bots, how come I have this weird feeling about the GTK file selector, this not so fresh firefox browser and script-catties? I am willing to blame the sun rise for this. I miss the days that people used to ask and I miss the days when linux felt like linux. -- carol (tomes) 14:26, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
