concerning category of swedish roadsigns

Hello Multichill! You are tagging some swedish roadsign with the "uncat" tag. But they do have a category and some of them are in a gallery too. [1] What's up? Akinom (talk) 19:23, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

I added all licence templates to my ignore list. These templates should only add a licence category. You seem to have a licence template ( {{PD-Vägverket}} ) which also adds a topic category, that's weird. I'll remove it from the ignore list and remove the template from the images in Category:Diagrams of road signs of Sweden. Any more templates of these kind you know about? Please add categories to this image

Sorry, you should accept the policy of using only articles for species images - without adding a category. The Image:Byturus tomentosus fg01.JPG is already stored and there is confusion if you add a category. Please read my notes on User:Dysmachus#Categories_and_articles. Hello - Please stop to force put image in categories. if they are in species articles they dont need to be in a category. that is the way we do it for species. if there will be hundrets of pics of a species we could use for this species a category. dont try to change something what is profed a good long long time. From Commons:Categories#Categories and/or galleries? : Some users are of the opinion that when an image is included in a gallery article, it is sufficient to categorize that article. Others believe that each individual image should be categorized too. The consensus on this issue, as determined by vote, is that both systems are equally valid and should be used concurrently. Do not remove categories just because an image is in a categorized gallery. It is hoped that in the future the software will be updated to merge the functionalities of galleries and categories into one. templates and bots

I outlined a really good taxonomy bot at Rockets talk page. The reason for this is the templates got me thinking. How sensitive are you to when a stupid mistake of who is interested in what is made? English wikipedia has a policy that if there is only one species in a genus to make only the genus article. Whether that makes sense there or not I have not actually been able to decide -- they have a bunch of articles. For here, the categories can function for more than just a place to collect images. For making lists of species and subgenus and stuff like that. Through much consideration of what I have seen online and what the software can accomplish beyond storing images, I have started to fill in the whole taxonomy tree regardless of if there is only one or not. -- carol (talk) 18:55, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
It has taken me a while to 1)learn enough of the science of botany to know what they are doing and 2)learn enough about the wiki-interface to know ways it can be used to allow the information that is already here to be presented in ways that the science already does. That is the reason that I am sorry for the redirects in the species categories that I made. Wiki search finds the synonyms in the text of the category page. I write this now because of the recent redirection change in Category:Jacobaea maritima. It actually should all go to something in Category:Cineraria (oops!). So this paragraph is both a defense, an apology and an explanation. Whee! that was quick! I have been working on the beginnings of the branching of those trees. When you are in of a mind to author software or express personal preferences, let me know. Like, should I put the outline for COMBotBot someplace else? I have more interesting templates that need to be pasted and should have plenty of category that need to be deleted but with simple requests being handled so "quickly" (that is a compliment, it was cool to see this) I am kind of wanting to show you instead where to work and what to paste and I also need some help (or time to figure it out on my own which is kind of boring when people here know how to do things) with the templates that are being pasted. -- carol (talk) 19:30, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

And now for the "less"on here -- it is for me I guess. I just had you delete the category that should exist and it was about an article I either wrote or expanded and I should know better than that. My bad and also, my bad before coffee today. Heh. It doesn't matter so much as I was headed there to get things looking better and also to be much more functional than it has been. "I was working in the other parts of the tree" she said defensively.

Category redirects part II

I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm trying to get non-empty hard category redirects to end up in Category:Non-empty category redirects also. My plan was to create a template (like this) and add it after the #REDIRECT part. This categorizes correctly and everything, it's just I can't figure out how to get your script to work with it. I keep getting "Dummy edit at Category:Something failed". I thought all I would need to do is craft a similar template and add the template's name to the script. This doesn't work. Even if I use {{category redirect}} itself. I guess it's the redirect part that's screwing it up. Any ideas? Rocket000 (talk) 14:16, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, I could (and will, if you think that's a better idea), but I was thinking if we're going to have a category redirect bot that runs a couple times a day, do we really need soft redirects anymore? Making soft redirects aids in maintenance and finding images because people get to see that some are not empty before being redirected. If they are continuously emptied automatically, the benefit of soft redirects is no longer there, AFAICS. That's not to say I think we should abandon {{seecat}} all together; I was planning on making a new template that was changed from hard to soft—hard when empty, soft when not, but I found this to be impossible due to #REDIRECT being very picky (it works with parser functions but not templates, and nothing can come before it so the best you can do is break it to make it soft—not pretty). The hard redirects do have many benefits. 1.) They make navigation easier. 2.) They take users coming from other projects (where most our links come from) to the right place. 3.) And, most importantly IMO, they don't count as categories and fill up Special:UnusedCategories. Maybe there's something with soft redirects I'm missing here, but I always saw them as a workaround and not an improvement to the #REDIRECT system. Rocket000 (talk) 05:31, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

COMBotBot

I started to write that in python syntax and it started to occur to me that if I am going to be writing instructions in python syntax that perhaps it is more advantageous to commons for bot writers and bot users to give up their priveleges for those who don't want to paste GAY templates everywhere. Media needing categories

Hello, did you notice that once a subcategory of Category:Media needing categories is empty, on that subcategory page the message about speedydelete appears automatically, but there comes no category line down that page and the mention at the Category:other speedy deletions page does not appear automatically; only after having put manually a speedydelete message at the empty page, that page appears at the speedeydelation category. Yes, noticed that too. You can just do a dummy edit (save without changing anything, wont show up in history) on the empty category and it will apear in Category:other speedy deletions. Good job on the categorisation! Maybe you're willing to help out in the future with Category:Media needing category review? My bot will automaticly try to find categories for pictures in Category:Media needing categories, but the result has to revied by a human. We can have a bot dummy edit these routinely (along with a couple other slow updating cats). I remember using a python script a long time ago called "touch.py" or something and it was pretty fast. Right now I just use AWB, which works fine for my purposes, but having something always running on the toolserver would be nice. Low resource demand I would imagine. Hoezo jammer? Cats voor alles, gallerijen voor de mooie plaatjes. Als een categorie te vol wordt kan er altijd een subcat (bijvoorbeeld Category:Archanara sparganii) worden aangemaakt. Bot needed

In the past few days I got more and more notifications that an image of mine needs to be categoriesed. When I uploaded most of my 1.500 something fotos there where no categories or it was not such an issue. So, if Wiki needs all images to be categoriesed - write me a bot and I'll do it... Hi Zyance, hotcat might be your tool of choice. You can activate it in Your preferences -> gadgets -> Tools for categories. I'm working on automatic categorization (see the other topics here at my talk page), but for this to work the image need to be used at some wikipedia or be in a gallery here. Bot work

Hello, a couple of questions.

  1. There seems to be a problem in Category:Media needing categories as of 22 July 2008 and later. It displays a red message "Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "," ". A problem in the UncategorizedHeader template I guess.
  2. Would it be possible to make a bot move the subcats and media contained in Category:Non-empty category redirects ? That would be a nice cleanup.
  3. Would it be possible to run this bot once a day (cron) or on another regular bases. When users use a redirected cat, then they get informed quickly, which avoids further bad categorisation.

Bot-vraag

Om commons-categorieën toe te kennen, begin ik bij een nl-pagina-categorie, bijv.nl:Categorie:Kasteel in Limburg (Nederland), dan ga ik langs alle pagina's en controleer alle plaatjes op die pagina's in commons om ze eventueel om te catten van Category:Castles in the Netherlands naar Category: Castles in Limburg, Netherlands. Ik zie jou zo snel dingen per bot doen, dat dit waarschijnlijk ook binnen je mogelijkheden ligt.Is dat zo, dan hebben we er een elegante manier van categoriseren bij, vermoed ik. Zou met een bot kunnen, ik heb in ieder geval even snel een lijstje voor je geschoten te vinden (hier). Dit zijn alle afbeeldingen die in nl:Categorie:Kasteel in Limburg (Nederland) gebruikt worden (dus ook afbeeldingen die in sjablonen staan). De query

'T wordt nog spannend. Vervolgvragen:

  1. Om mee verder te gaan: Kun je (me leren) kasteellijstjes (te) maken voor alle provincies?
  2. Kun je de procedure ook de andere kant uit laten lopen: kijk eens naar category:Coats of arms to be classified, Nederland met zijn 443 gemeentes is vrijwel OKE, dat heb ik vorig jaar gedaan; maar met name Frankkijk met zijn 40.000 gemeentes is een puinhoop, terwijl op de franse wiki veel gegevens vastliggen. Dus een correlatie: fr:Blasons xxx - Commons:Coats of arms xxx zou zeer welkom zijn.
  3. HotCat heb ik op mijn preferenties aangevinkt. Sorry, ik programmeer nooit iets; ik kan die regels niet "lezen" en ik heb een gebruiksaanwijzing nodig bij je query en bij HotCat.     2. Wellicht wel, maar ik ben ook bezig (zoals ik al eerder zei) met een bot om automatisch afbeeldingen te voorzien van een category. Image:74520.jpg geeft bijvoorbeeld Category:Cities and villages in Haute-Savoie (van hier). Dit is een wat magere vangst, maar dit valt te verbeteren. Als je alle artikelen in fr:Catégorie:Armorial des communes de France, par département voorziet van een link naar de bijbehorende categorie op commons dan doet de bot het al een heel stuk beter.Perfect! Het duurt even voordat hotcat het doet (of je moet je browser verversen met iets als CTRL-F5), maar als het werk zie je op eens een plusje naast category, bijvoorbeeld hieronder staat bij mij Category: (+).   • En voor kastelen heb ik zowel een nl:lijst als nl:categorieën om mee te werken, ik zet de nederlandse pagina's op mijn bureaublad en dat werkt als een "geschoten lijst" (misschien minder volledig, maar ja). Categorised pages with uncategorised images

Hoy, Multichill, is it possible to first select pages with uncategorised images, and classifie these alike the page, before dispersing those to "media needing categories"? Greetings Havang (talk) 10:09, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Difficult because of the sheer volume of images. This was my first plan, but the queries took way to long. My new plan. Day 1; images gets uploaded. Day 2; the picture gets tagged as uncategorized. Day 3; the picture is automaticly categorized. Still have to catch up with some backlog (i'm now at Category:Media needing categories as of 1 January 2008). I will modify {{UncategorizedHeader}} to show if a bot already tried to categorise pictures in that category. Multichill ( ) 10:18, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

That template placed itself there when I reloaded to make sure I had remembered to remove all of the templates from the images. So perhaps the speedydelete template should jump into the empty category :)

Your bot

Your bot is a PITA. Rather than program it to mark all my images as non-categorized, why not help by assigning a category. Hmmm, seems more productive. Or tell me how to make a bot, and I will do it myself. Thanks. Rarelibra (talk) 03:30, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Excellent suggestion. Bot writers will need to know the process and the logic to write a software that can work that way. Categorizing your own images is a good start towards that. -- carol (talk) 03:51, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I noticed that even humans categorise in a different way with varying degrees of accuracy and completeness. Once you find a human procedure that works flawlessly, we can think on a bot procedure, not the other way round. --Foroa (talk) 07:11, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
There are two things that a couple of months ago, I thought was impossible. One was that a software could be written to find the correct category for the images that I categorized here last year (gleaning the information from the description or image title or where it was being used). The other was that a software could find a duplicate image if it existed from a base of 3 million images. I was wrong about one of those tasks!! -- carol (talk) 08:19, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
@Rarelibra, tagging as uncategorized is only the first step (see here). I already have a bot to automaticly categorise images (source) which i used in several test runs (result) but i have to fix some things before i'll let it run again.
@carol, finding duplicates is easy now since we now have a hash of every image. Automatic categorization is based on the usage in galleries or at wikipedia. For the second part i use commonssense.   1. Don't tell me about ease and hash marks! There is this beautiful thing when software does something that really would be impossible for a real person to accomplish more efficiently (quickly, precisely and all of that) and this one task seemed impossible for even software to do as efficiently as it is. Just a little more time with this being a modern day miracle -- PLEASE!
  2. Gallery titles for categorization here is a great idea. Slurping the categories from English wikipedia -- perhaps those images can be added to their own category so that they can be edited, reduced and/or refined?

You might want to take a look at Category:Media needing category review. All images which are categorized based on data from commonshelper will be placed in a subcategory of Category:Media needing category review. Multichill ( ) 07:05, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
I had a short look on the automatic categorisation results and some of them are really impressive and will save significant work. A couple of remarks/suggestions:
  • On many places, you managed to find the country but this is accompanied by several "xxx by country" categories. This should be not too hard to improve (easy to say). The same goes for xxx by city, but is less important.
  • When inserting a xxx by country cat, it might be useful to add a comment with the country name behind it
  • When you manage to find the birth year, then I guess you found a basic article, so it should be interesting to insert that as an interwiki (that takes 30 % of my categorisation time). A wrong or double interwiki's are better than nothing.
  • As above, when you manage to find the birth year, it might be feasible to reuse the defaultsort
  • I guess that you don't include redirected pages. It might be useful to flag root categories (categories for diffusion) and disambiguation pages (and redirect pages if unavoidable) with a comment indicating so
  • I fail to see the need for adding category:Categories for discussion
  • I understand that you inherit some information from commonsense, which limits your degree of freedom, so should the tools not be discussed as a couple/tandem ?

Hi Foroa, as is said above i'm using commonssense to find categories. Yesterday i wrote a filter to filter out supercategories. Commonsense will check where an image is used, see if the article has a link to commons, if not check this for every category at the article, then the parent categories, etc etc. For example Image:Anne-sexton.jpg will give a lot of junk because of the amount of categories at en:Anne Sexton. I have a little project to add links to commons to as many categories as possible to make Commonssense give better results. If an image ends up in a "xxx by country" this usually means the category doesnt exist at commons or that the commonscat template is missing at wikipedia. I would rather keep my bot as a wrapper around commonssense and try to add these improvements to CommonSense. User talk:Multichill/Categories might be a nice special talk page. You, a list of uploads, hotcat and a rainy afternoon is all what it takes to categorize all these images. You can activate Hotcat in Your preferences -> gadgets -> Tools for categories. Duplicate detection

When considering all the additional work caused by identical images flooding from all sides, I am wondering if this image duplicate checking could not be done systematically at upload time, especially for bot loads. I guesstimate that a person is half-time busy by handling this duplicates, sending them to the delinker, ...

Cross-categorisation

Hello, Multichill. Category:Via Lemovicensis turns out to be some kind of side category of city categories. I did a try-out to avoid that an item comes twice in the city category by making a page linking categories, see the page Limoges concerning Via Lemovicensis‎ linking Category:Limoges concerning Via Lemovicensis and Category:Limoges. See how this works out on Category:Limoges and Category:Via Lemovicensis. (Same for Bourges). The page functions as "link-and-separate category trees". It seems to me that for the linking page and the side-category templates could be made and that a more general use of pages linking categories should be possible. I want to have your opinion before it bringing to Village pump. Bad autocat categories

This morning again, I removed a number of images out the disambiguation category:Berg. This error arrives when the image has something to do with mountains, and nothing with the related category Berg communes or area.

Sorry, I got out of the habit of adding categories back when I was simultaneously chastised for putting images in too general a category and chastised for making species categories instead of species pages. And now I'm being chastised for removing incorrect categories (as well as having uncategorized templates or categories from galleries added to all the images that User:Ies ripped out of categories some time back). Questions and a large Yikes!

I just looked at Category:Media needing categories and from about July 23 onward -- this is a huge difference!! That would be the yikes!

My bot first tags images as uncategorized, this will put these images in a subcategory of Category:Media needing categories and a subcategory of Category:Media needing categories to be checked by a bot. A second bot tries to categorize these images. When a bot is done with a category it will tag the category as checked (like this). This will place the category in Category:Media needing categories requiring human attention. Whole process is described here. Multichill (talk) 07:44, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Don't put files into Category:People by country

Nice work on the automatic categorisation using your bot. In most cases, it's at least a good first attempt, allowing those of us monitoring certain categories and have a decent idea of the relevant subcategories to see the images in context and sort it into more relevant categories.

If possible, though, could you try to make sure the bot doesn't put files into categories such as Category:People by country, which should only ever be an intermediary category? That category should only contain subdirectories for people from specific countries. This of course goes for all the top-level subdirectories of Category:Categories by country. If you've managed to get the bot to conclude that Image:LasseLindh.jpg should go in Category:People by country and Category:Sweden, it shouldn't really be rocket science to put two and two together and place it in Category:People of Sweden, but even just placing it in the country category and simply not including people by country would reduce clutter. —LX (talk, contribs) 13:55, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

It means: If the bot puts the item in a certain category, it should be nice if it runs lower category levels (like catscans do) to see if a lower level cat fits also. Hmm, let's see, i could make a filter for this. I would need a list of countries. Go over all categories
  1. See if a category is present in the form of <x> by country
  2. See if a category is present containing a country (<y>, i need a list of countries for that)
  3. See if there is a subcategory of <x> by country which contains <y>, add this category or move the image to <x>
For Image:LasseLindh.jpg, this would go like this:
  1. Found Category:People by country
  2. Found Category:Sweden
  3. Found Category:People of Sweden, replace Category:People by country with Category:People of Sweden

Ongoing bot autocat feedback

Hi, as you can see in Category:Non-empty category redirects, a rich bot autocat harvest of redirected categorisations. (some of them, with the big numbers, are a preparation for merging or renaming categories). What's striking is the chinese/arabic/russian cat names, which are unreadable for most people and in my opinion should never occur. --Foroa (talk) 06:23, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Did you read my response? I implemented followRedirects. Please wait with deleting category redirects, this will create a lot of broken links at wikipedia's. I plan on changing commonscat.py to correct these links to redirect categories, but for this the categories still have to be present. Multichill (talk) 08:41, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I read your comments. I am not deleting redirects because of the bot cats. Most people that do a lot of categorisation check only if a link is blue or use the java tools (HotCat, search box) for auto fill in. In fact, through the redirects, people are learning wrong rules. Therefore, category redirects that simply redirect because there is a mistake in the of/from, capitalisation and plural rules generate more problems than they solve.

Incorrectly tagging images with "categorization needed"

The bot seems to tag images that don't have a category but are linked from an article page. For example: It tags all images from Thomas Reiter. There is no category for Thomas Reiter and we don't need one as we already have the article page, and I don't want all those pictures to redundantly clutter the German astronauts page! --startaq (talk) 07:55, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

I think that the bot did not convert categories that redirect to galleries or the ones with syntax errors; the strange ones seem to be put in the User:Multichill/Zandbak list.
