Move from Commons, looking for a better means

Occasionally we have the requirement to remove files from Commons to one of the sister sites due to copyright, yet we don't have a tool to undertake such activities. When it is a file that affects enWikisource, like Commons:Deletion requests/Some illustrations from Rothschild's Extinct Birds it is not user friendly with available tools, eg. we can import the file wrapper, though not the file itself. Do you know of a means to make this happen more smoothly, or are we condemned to downloading and then reuploading the file at Wikisource via manual means? Hey, I noticed this discussion, chiming in — sorry for intruding...

On fr.wp, User:Coyau set up a bot (fr:User:Le plus bot) to move easily some unfree images (no-FOP buildings) from Commons to WP. The bot needs admin rights to do so. Custom upload form for Dutch Wiki loves monuments

Try this one. Does that do what you had envisioned? Once it does what you want it to do, we can integrate the script so that the "withJS" parameter is no longer necessary.

Note that some more fiddling around with the Help message texts is needed. Currently, the help text for the description field instructs the user to enter an {{Information}} template, but that's exactly what he or she shouldn't do. And the help for the license is also misleading.

Tested on monobook only; please try also the vector skin.

Note that if an error or a warning occurs and the servers send back the upload form instead of doing the upload, the license selection will be lost. That appears to be a problem on the server-side: it loses the "uselang" parameter in that case!

Still, I think this might be a workable approach. Let me know if you want any changes you can't do yourself. Lupo 18:05, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

• Samenvatting might be a bit big, it should use the "description" translation and field
• The box with all the buttons can be removed
• License should just be set (hidden), don't prompt the user for it
• Could you add a "rijksmonumentnummer" field? It's a unique id on which I can fetch information from a database (maybe later with some more js magic)

The form is based on the basic upload form. "Samenvatting" does use the "description" translation and field. The edittools box with all the button is standard; I could hide it, but why? Hiding the license is easily doable. About the "rijksmonumentnummer" field: I could add that, but there'd be no help for it, and it'd have a hard-coded text label. Also, should the input in that field be validated? If so, how? And what is the script supposed to do with the value upon submit? If you want to fetch information automatically from an external database, that's pretty easy to do within the upload form script itself if that database has a JSONP interface: make the monument number mandatory (and maybe even the only input field?), then let the script fetch the info and fill in the {{Information}} automatically. If there is a JSONP interface, automatic fetching is indeed very cool. I fooled around with this for the "fromflickr" form, and it works really well, but it isn't live yet.

OTOH, if you were thinking about using the RCE KICH dataset, it's probably easier if you download that dataset and then use a bot to add the infos. (But I notice that they don't say what the license for this dataset, and in particular for the descriptions in there, is. The geoinformation would be PD, I presume.) Been there, done that :-) See nl:Categorie:Lijsten van rijksmonumenten for all the nice lists at nlwp. I read these in a database (toolserveer p_erfgoed_p.monumenten) each night. Current output is only available in kml voor Google Earth at http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/monumenten_op_de_kaart/ , but more is planned. Shouldn't be too hard to output JSON format. JSONp, i.e., with the possibility to specify a callback function in the request (&format=json&callback=window.MyFunc), an getting back not a naked JS object but a JS call "window.MyFunction({...});". But before we go to the more advanced part, let's first fix the basic part.

• I added a couple of missing translations
• Looks like I have to create a subpages of MediaWiki:UploadFormDescriptionHelp, MediaWiki:UploadFormLicenseHelp and MediaWiki:UploadFormCategoriesHelp to get the helptexts right
• Could you make the description field smaller (one line)?
• Could you add an extra field for the rijksmonument number. If set it should be put in {{Rijksmonument}} at the end of the description field in {{Information}}
• Could you remove the big box with the special chars?

That whole upload form stuff was never meant to be used that way. You can't override just a few individual help texts from the /nl messages for /nlwikilovesmonuments, which is what we'd like to have. So you'll have to set up the full set of /nlwikilovesmonuments messages, setting all of them to just transclude the corresponding /nl message. Then set MediaWiki:Uploadfooter/nlwikilovesmonuments to contain the transclusion "{{MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts|live=1|lang=nl|useform=wikilovesmonuments}}". A full list of messages is visible at MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts. The messages actually used on the WLM form are then

• MediaWiki:UploadFormUploadFileHelp/nlwikilovesmonuments,
• MediaWiki:UploadFormDestFileHelp/nlwikilovesmonuments,
• MediaWiki:UploadFormDescriptionHelp/nlwikilovesmonuments,
• MediaWiki:UploadFormLicenseHelp/nlwikilovesmonuments,
• MediaWiki:UploadFormWatchthisHelp/nlwikilovesmonuments,

I think it's all done now. I can't remove the license selector, that'll make other stuff fails (for instance, the placement of the license help text). Met dit sjabloon speelt een taalkundig probleempje: indien de naam van de maker is ingevuld (bv. {{self|author=Pietje Puk|<licentie>}}), resulteert dat in de introtekst "Pietje Puk, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following license" en dat is natuurlijk krom Engels. Rm'n en buildings

Hoi Multi, niet alle rijksmonumenten zijn buildings, er zitten ook straatklokken, siervazen, rolpalen, fonteinen, standbeelden enz enz bij. Daarom lijkt het me niet correct om de rm-cats overal onder te brengen in Buildings in ...-cats. Wat de provincie Groningen betreft heb ik dat zojuist gefixt (=de cat één nivo hoger gebracht), maar als dat in andere provincies ook zo is gedaan, dan moet dat daar ook nog even worden veranderd. Op Commons gebruiken we de "Buildings" boom in de breedste zin van het woord dus eigenlijk zoals bouwwerken op nlwp of Buildings and structures op enwp. Rijksmonumenten vallen dan prima onder buildings. Multichill (talk) 08:59, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Kom op zeg, een straatklok of een siervaas is geen building, die Commons-definitie klopt gewoon niet. Zie Van Dale EN-NL: bouwwerk, bouwsel, pand, huis en Oxford Reference Dictionary: a permanent built structure that can be entered (onderstreping van mij). Ik moet de eerste siervaas, straatklok, standbeeld rolpaal, fontein etc nog zien die je van binnen kunt betreden en niemand zal op het idee komen om zulke objecten in een buildings-cat te zoeken. Sowieso begrijp ik sommige bewerkingen die je met je botje doet niet. Zo had je twee foto's van de rm'n 20285 en 514056 uit de Category:Rijksmonumenten in Glimmen naar de Category:Rijksmonumenten in Haren, Groningen verplaatst (gefixt), terwijl die toch echt in Glimmmen staan - wat de laatste foto betreft had ik daar nota bene de camera location bij gezet. De dingen die jij opnoemt zijn allemaal structures. Die staan op Commons in Nederland altijd in de building boom net zoals buildings en structures op de enwp. Zie bijvoorbeeld Category:Buildings in Groningen (province), nl:Categorie:Bouwwerk in Groningen (provincie) & en:Category:Buildings and structures in Groningen (province).

Glimmen is een bosrijk dorp in de gemeente Haren bron dus Category:Houses in Haren, Groningen is correct. Multichill (talk) 16:36, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Als het dan structures zijn, noem ze dan ook zo en maak dan op Commons ook maar supercats buildings and structures aan. Elke building is een structure, maar niet elke structure is een building. Rolpalen, siervazen, standbeelden of straatklokken buildings noemen is gewoon flauwekul, zie de woordenboekdefinities hierboven. En nogmaals, niemand gaat zulke dingen in een cat met buildings zoeken. Het gaat toch om de vindbaarheid van de afbeeldingen? Dan moet je rm'n niet onder buildings hangen.

En wat die panden in Glimmen betreft: die staan dus echt daar en niet in Haren (ik heb die foto's verdomme zelf gemaakt, dus vertel mij wat). Er werd op Commons bij mijn weten tot nog toe binnen gemeentes op plaatsen gecategoriseerd en ik dacht bovendien ook dat onnodig dubbel categoriseren zoveel mogelijk diende te worden vermeden. Wie foto's van een gebouw in Glimmen zoekt, zal echt niet gaan kijken bij de buildings in Haren.

Waarom er trouwens nu overal weer een extra laag met houses wordt aangelegd snap ik ook al niet, want het onderscheid tussen buildings en houses lijkt me soms tamelijk arbitrair en dus verwarrend. Er zijn blijkbaar naast elkaar de begrippen buildings, structures en houses in zwang. Lekker inzichtelijk hoor. Voeg je geen cats toe, dan komt er een botje op je opee zeuren en voeg je ze wél toe, dan blijkt nu dat de tijdenlang gebruikelijke cats opeens fout verklaard zijn en komt er óók een botje langs. Wat is nu de bedoeling? Dubbel categoriseren? Driedubbel categoriseren? Moet het hier met de cats net zo'n zooitje worden als op en:wiki? Ik heb steeds mijn best gedaan mijn afbeeldingen zo secuur mogelijk te beschrijven en te categoriseren, maar als het zo moet gaat de lol van foto's voor Commons maken er wel af. It's entirely appropriate to use it for files with missing authorship information. Bot Mistake

That's strange. I did this query with this result. This included File:Bluestar 556 YG52 CEN.JPG. So somehow the image had no categorylinks. I see the page was moved recently, maybe the moving didn't trigger a category table update. If that's the case we should see similar behavior with recently moved pages. Seems to have gone wrong with some more files. Rather strange. Earlier this week I ran another query to find files which are marked as uncategorized and contain a non-hidden category. The result is here (about 5800 items). All incorrectly tagged images should be somewhere in this list. I plan on removing the uncategorized template from these files. Zoals je gezien hebt op discussie pagina van Martin H. ben ik na het nomineren van een upload er op gewezen dat er geen foto's gebruikt mogen worden van de mindef.nl site. Het probleem zit in het niet beschikbaar stellen voor commercieel gebruik en omdat ik vond dat dit niet strookte met de tekst in de disclaimer op de mindef.nl site heb ik de stoute schoenen aangetrokken en die nagevraagd.

Immers met de gedachte; nee heb je, ja kan je krijgen. En wat schetst mijn stomme verbazing in de eerste reactie krijg ik dit te horen;

Not so hidden as it seems to be

Look at this. I uploaded quite a lot of pictures (cca 500 from Wikiexpedition) in July, all of them without categories. Then I started to add categories + description (currently about 1/4 of my work is done). The files are placed in one hidden category, which is being replaced by standard ones. Once this is done, the bot should not tag the files as uncategorized. But he does so. There might be some error, lag in a database (I mean like the bot does not recognize newer edits to the files) etc. --Aktron (talk) 08:49, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Delinker Log of renamed File:Limicola falcinellus P4233571.jpg

Hi Multichill, File:Limicola falcinellus P4233571.jpg was renamed File:Xenus cinereus (Alnus).jpg by User:Electron on my request. Something must have gone wrong and Delinker removed it from a couple of projects without replacing the new name. I manually checked all Terek Sandpiper articles from different projects and where I saw Delinker removal of it I readded the new file name - but there might have been more articles not that obvious. Would it be possible to get a Delinker log showing where exactly [:File:Limicola falcinellus P4233571.jpg] was removed? user:Abigor already tried to retrieve, but was not able to get a usable log. Thanks - have it now. Didn't work yesterday. Now the image has been manually replaced at all delinked project articles.

Bot question

Yes I noticed. No harm done for this run. Will add some exceptions for future runs. As for the current run:

A. The image gets deleted: nothing happens

B. The image is kept: Either the keeping admin adds a proper category or the categorization bot will tag it again

Have a bot ask users to check when they tranfer?

Hi! I was thinking if we should make a bot leave users a note asking them to check the images after transfer to Commons. I was thinking that if we make some good description telling users how much it would help if they looked removed the botchecktemplate (and cleaned up ofcourse) then some users might cleanup after themselves. They do not need to be afraid because no admin should delete the original without checking the transfer. Bot should only leave a notice if the botchecktempate is not removed within an hour or a day. --MGA73 (talk) 19:25, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

We, de wikipedia, are doing (in a kind of extended "beta" stage - not in large scale) moves to Commons via bot (which useses commonshelper). Example: File:Hanomag_Sommer_1950.jpg. You would notify the bot/master in this case. Just one day ago I brought up the topic on notifying the bot operators when the do not check the transfers after a while.

In general I think notifying would be a good thing, although there needs to be a different solution for user:boteas (the de.wikipedia bot). One problem I see is that users notified just remove the "bot check needed" template and do nothing else. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:48, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
